Recognize Teacher Leadership as a Teachable Skill.
The skills needed by teacher leaders will be determined by the needs of the school or school district. It will be important that the school administrators, as well as, the teacher leader identify the skills needed to be effective, based on the current needs of the school or school district. As school leaders, building the capacity of others to lead is a responsibility no matter the school or organization. As such, school leaders must allocate time and resources to assist the teacher in developing the needed skills to be an effective teacher leader. In many cases, the skills needed by the teacher leader are:
Our recommendation is to start with a short list of skills that you feel would benefit your district. Leadership in and of itself may not be a teachable skill, but the skills involved in being an effective leader can be taught. Our short list of skills includes listening, advocacy, use of evidence, and monitoring progress. School administrators must recognize that leadership is a journey and not a destination. Like administrators, teacher leaders will grow and develop leadership skills through experience and opportunities to coach and mentor other teachers. The organic growth of leadership skills will ensure alignment to the school’s vision that is necessary to be effective.
